Bawādir al-Nawādir, by Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānvī
Bawādir al-Nawādir is an Urdu collection of scholarly discussions, legal reflections, theological observations, and miscellaneous religious writings by Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānvī (d. 1362 AH / 1943 CE), one of the most prolific and influential Muslim scholars of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century India.
As its title suggests, the work gathers a range of noteworthy and comparatively uncommon discussions drawn from Thānvī’s wide-ranging scholarly interests. The contents reflect his characteristic engagement with Ḥanafī jurisprudence, theology, ethics, devotional practice, social questions, and the clarification of issues that arose in the religious life of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent. Rather than constituting a single sustained treatise, the work is valuable as a collection of discrete scholarly observations and responses, preserving material that might otherwise have remained scattered.
The present copy is the second edition, published in Muḥarram 1365 AH / December 1945–January 1946 CE by Dār al-Ishāʿat, Deoband, a publishing house established by Muftī Muḥammad Shafīʿ ʿUthmānī (d. 1396 AH / 1976 CE).
