Tanwīr al-Mirʾāt Sharḥ Ḍiyāʾ al-Qirāʾāt, with Fawāʾid Makkiyyah maʿa Ḥawāshī Marḍiyyah and Maʿrifat al-Rusūm, by Shaykh Ibn Ḍiyāʾ Muḥibb al-Dīn Aḥmad al-Ilāhābādī.

This volume contains three works relating to Qurʾānic recitation, tajwīd and Qurʾānic orthography by Shaykh Ibn Ḍiyāʾ Muḥibb al-Dīn Aḥmad al-Ilāhābādī (d. 1401 AH/1980–81 CE).

The first work, Tanwīr al-Mirʾāt Sharḥ Ḍiyāʾ al-Qirāʾāt, is an Urdu commentary on Ḍiyāʾ al-Qirāʾāt, the well-known work on qirāʾāt composed by the author’s father, Qārī Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn Aḥmad al-Ilāhābādī. It was printed separately at Maṭbaʿ Majīdī, Kanpur, in 1359 AH/1940–41 CE, and comprises 64 pages.

The second work, Fawāʾid Makkiyyah maʿa Ḥawāshī Marḍiyyah, consists of Fawāʾid Makkiyyah, a treatise on tajwīd by the celebrated qārī Ḥāfiẓ Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Makkī al-Ilāhābādī, together with Muḥibb al-Dīn’s marginal gloss, Ḥawāshī Marḍiyyah. Muḥibb al-Dīn was a direct student of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Makkī, and thus composed these marginal notes upon the work of his own teacher. The work is therefore of particular interest as a product of the living teacher-pupil tradition of qirāʾāt in North India.

The third work, Maʿrifat al-Rusūm, is Muḥibb al-Dīn’s treatise on matters relating to the orthography and written forms of the Qurʾānic text. Fawāʾid Makkiyyah maʿa Ḥawāshī Marḍiyyah and Maʿrifat al-Rusūm were printed together as a single issue by Maṭbaʿ Majīdī, Kanpur, in 1346 AH/1927–28 CE, comprising 50 pages in total.

Although Tanwīr al-Mirʾāt was published independently, while Fawāʾid Makkiyyah maʿa Ḥawāshī Marḍiyyah and Maʿrifat al-Rusūm were printed together, all three works have subsequently been bound together in the present volume.
