Zubdat al-Manāsik, by Mawlānā Rashīd Aḥmad Gangohī

Zubdat al-Manāsik is an Urdu manual on the rites and practical rulings of ḥajj and ʿumrah by Mawlānā Rashīd Aḥmad Gangohī (d. 1323 AH / 1905 CE), one of the leading Ḥanafī scholars of nineteenth-century India and a major figure associated with the early Deoband school.

The work presents the essential regulations and devotional practices connected with pilgrimage in a concise and accessible form for Urdu-speaking readers. It covers the principal stages of the pilgrimage, including iḥrām, ṭawāf, saʿy, the rites of ʿArafāt and Muzdalifah, the stoning of the jamarāt, sacrifice, and the completion of ḥajj, together with relevant legal guidance drawn from the Ḥanafī school.

Its title, Zubdat al-Manāsik—“The Essence of the Rites”—reflects the work’s practical character: it distils the main rulings of pilgrimage into a compact handbook suitable for pilgrims and students alike. As such, it belongs to the important body of nineteenth-century Indo-Muslim literature that sought to make classical Ḥanafī jurisprudence available in clear Urdu prose.

The present edition was printed in 1310 AH / 1892–93 CE at al-Maṭbaʿ al-Mujtabāʾī, Delhi, one of the prominent North Indian presses responsible for the publication of Arabic, Persian and Urdu religious works.
