Mubāḥathah-yi Shāhjahānpūr, by Mawlānā Muḥammad Qāsim Nānautwī

Mubāḥathah-yi Shāhjahānpūr is an Urdu record of the celebrated religious debate held at Shahjahanpur in which Mawlānā Muḥammad Qāsim Nānautwī (d. 1297 AH / 1880 CE), founder of Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband, represented the Muslim position in discussions with Christian missionaries and other religious disputants. The debate centred on fundamental theological questions, including the truth of revelation, prophecy, the status of Christianity, and the evidences advanced for Islam.

The Shahjahanpur gathering formed part of a series of public religious debates in North India during the late nineteenth century, at a time when Muslim, Christian and Hindu scholars frequently met in formal disputations. Nānautwī became particularly renowned for his participation in these encounters and for his use of both rational and transmitted arguments. The proceedings of the Shahjahanpur debate were subsequently compiled and circulated under the title Mubāḥathah-yi Shāhjahānpūr.

The present edition was printed in 1904 CE at al-Maṭbaʿ al-Mujtabāʾī, Delhi, one of the important North Indian presses responsible for the publication of Arabic, Persian and Urdu scholarly and religious works during this period.
