Tahdhīb al-ʿAqāʾid: Sharḥ al-ʿAqāʾid al-Nasafiyyah, by Shaykh Najm al-Ghanī Khān
Tahdhīb al-ʿAqāʾid: Sharḥ al-ʿAqāʾid al-Nasafiyyah is an Urdu commentary on the celebrated theological primer al-ʿAqāʾid al-Nasafiyyah of Imām Najm al-Dīn Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar al-Nasafī. The work was composed by Shaykh Najm al-Ghanī Khān with the aim of explaining the concise doctrinal formulations of the original text for an Urdu-reading audience.
Al-ʿAqāʾid al-Nasafiyyah became one of the most widely studied summaries of Sunni theology in the Islamic scholarly tradition, particularly within the Ḥanafī-Māturīdī curriculum. Because of the extreme concision of the original Arabic text, it generated a large commentarial tradition, most famously the commentary of Saʿd al-Dīn al-Taftāzānī.
The present edition was printed in 1318 AH/1900 CE at Maṭbaʿ Nāmī, Lucknow, a prominent North Indian press active in the publication of Urdu, Persian and Arabic religious and literary works.
The author, Shaykh Muḥammad Najm al-Ghanī Khān al-Rāmpūrī (d. 1360 AH / 1941 CE), hailed from a distinguished family of scholars. His father was Shaykh ʿAbd al-Ghanī Khān, son of Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAlī Khān, son of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Khān, son of Shaykh Muḥaddith Muḥammad Saʿīd, who was a student of Shāh Walī Allāh Muḥaddith al-Dihlawī (d. 1176 AH / 1762 CE).
