Awn al-Khabir Sharh al-Fawz al-Kabir

Author: Mawlana Sufi Abd al-Hamid Khan Swati

Awn al-Khabir is an Urdu commentary of al-Fawz al-Kabir, the famous and accepted Usul al-Tafisir work of Shah Waliyyullah. Mawlana Sufi Abd al-Hamid’s recorded lectures were penned and Mawlana Sufi Abd al-Hamid reviewed the work after it took the form of a book.

When Mawlana Ubaidullah Sindhi was looking to learn the science of Usul al-Tafsir, he approached his teacher Shaykh al-Hind Mawlana Mahmud Hasan and he asked him to guide to him a particular book. His teacher suggested Imam al-Suyuti’s al-Itqan. Mawlana Ubaidullah studied the work many times over but he could not find what he was looking for. He also believed that there is no other work more beneficial than al-Itqan. Therefore, he lost all hope of gaining this knowledge of the Quran. Then Shaykh al-Hind Mawlana Mahmud Hasan introduced him to the book of Shah Waliyyullah, al-Fawz al-Kabir. In this book he found what he was looking for and after studying it achieved his aspirations.

Al-Fawz al-Kabir in the words of Shah Waliyyullah:

‘This beggar Waliyyullah bin Abd al-Rahim (with whom Allah may deal graciously) states that when Allah opened the door of discernment of the Quran for this mendicant he had an impulse to scribe some of the useful hints (helpful to people in comprehension of the Quran) in a slim volume. It is hoped that with the grace of Allah, students would find in it a way so clear for grasping the meanings of the Quran as may not be available to them even after spending a life-time in the study of commentaries and writings of exegetes.
